Development Bus Terminal Guidelines for ASTRU
Under funding from Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, a detailed bus terminal (local and regional) design guideline for Association of State Road Transport Undertaking (ASRTU). Bus terminal planning in terms of infrastructure, operations, and financial planning requires certain enablers, which must be put in place. Therefore, the guideline is developed to meet the need for resource material specific to Indian context; it provides planning and design recommendations for different typologies and sizes of bus terminal complex.
As a part of this study, design for four bus terminals (two local and two regional) were developed for four different STUs, in Delhi, Chandigarh, Coimbatore and Kaylan. covering all parameters and requirements of terminal facility design, including infrastructure, operations, maintenance and financing options. Literature and case study review of best practices (nationally and internationally) and understanding of bus terminal requirement in Indian context through stakeholder interaction. Finalization of all planning/design drawings (including suggested sectional elevations or massing and external finishing options) and draft specifications in agreement with stakeholders at each site. This guideline includes space and site area requirements for projects of varying sizes and typologies, based on inclusion or exclusion of different real estate development linked infrastructure requirements. These are tied to expected project cost, and the real estate floor area required to be developed to offset the same. Capacity building and training workshop with ASRTU, STU and MoUD representatives to demonstrate the use of the developed guidelines.
